The New York University women's soccer team fell 2-1 in a hard-fought University Athletic Association (UAA) battle at fifth-ranked Washington University on Friday, October 12, in St. Louis, MO.
After a scoreless first half, the Bears (10-1-1, 2-0-1) scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of the second to go up.
Amelia Hammerl cut the deficit in half for the Violets (9-4, 1-2) with 18:50 to play, but NYU could not pull even before time expired.
Highlights
- In a game in which both teams peppered the net with shots, combing for 49 total attempts,
Mary Clair made a pair of huge stops on the endline in the early going to keep things even.
- Lillie Toaspern put the Bears up 1-0 just 1:09 into the second half, taking a pass from Anna Zambricki at the goalmouth after a scramble in front. Ten minutes later Zambricki made it 2-0, one-timing a cross from Toaspern.
- Hammerl got NYU on the board in the 72nd minute.
Melissa Menta won the ball near the right corner and played a low cross to Hammerl, who one-timed it to the left post. Menta's assist was her ninth of the year, breaking the school record for assists in a season and increasing her school-record point total to 33 for the season.

Meg Patten made several big saves for the Violets, including a pair from point-blank range. She finished with eight stops between the pipes, while Washington's Clara Jaques turned away seven shots.

Ashley-Simone McKenzie had several strong chances during the game, including one from McKenzie in the 59th minute that Jaques just got enough of to send wide.
