Box Score vs. Richard Stockton
The New York University women's volleyball team won both of its matches and finished in second place at the NYU Violet Classic, which was held on Friday and Saturday, September 23-24, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
After dropping both of its matches on Friday, NYU (12-6) reversed course and defeated both Gettysburg College (9-6) and Richard Stockton College (11-4) in four sets on Saturday. In both contests, the Violets dropped the opening set before sweeping the final three.
"It seems that some of our urgency isn't there at the beginning of matches," said NYU head coach
Jolie Ward. "We have a young team, and sometimes it may take a set for them to understand what they need to do."
After dropping the first set to Gettysburg 25-19, the Violets posted 25-20, 25-22 and 25-21 victories.
NYU was led by
Sarah Buckingham's 16 kills,
Kaylee Schanda's 21 digs,
Hope Bogle's 47 set assists, and Alex Mao's three blocks.
Bogle and Schanda each had three service aces, as well.
Cydney Bracken had 19 kills and Rebecca Rubenstein had 18 digs for Gettysburg.
In the second match, the Violets again fell behind, dropping the first set 25-22. Once again, though, a rejuvenated NYU squad responded with 25-22, 25-22 and 25-20 victories to claim the match.
"We made lots of changes to our defense after the first day," Ward explained. "Kaylee played more and really made a difference. I told the players that they had to have a sense of urgency on defense, and they responded."
Schanda added another 16 digs in the second match, while Buckingham registered 21 kills. Bogle set a career high with 61 assists, while
Kolby Warren produced 12 kills, four digs and three blocks.
Stephanie Warner had 18 kills for Richard Stockton, while Ashley Gubista added 23 digs.
Schanda and Warren were both named to the All-Tournament Team, as was Bracken, Christine Luebcke of Hunter College and Nicole Serekian of Richard Stockton.
Eastern University, which won the Classic with a perfect 4-0 record, had two players honored. Courtney Reinhold was named to the All-Tournament Team, while Maria Horning was selected Most Valuable Player.
NYU returns to the court next weekend in St. Louis for the UAA Round Robin #1.
