After a scoreless first half, the New York University women's soccer team could not hold off 19th-ranked University of Rochester in the second and fell 3-0 on Saturday, October 8, in Rochester, NY.

The Yellowjackets' (7-3, 2-0) Ellen Coleman, the reigning University Athletic Association (UAA) Most Valuable Player, scored just 1:42 into the second period to put Rochester up.

Coleman then assisted on the Yellowjackets' next goal and added another goal of her own to lead the squad past the Violets (8-4, 0-2).

“We came out sharp in the first half and played well,” said NYU head coach Michele Canning. “We have some lessons to learn from our performance in the second half.”

Several Violets had strong chances in that first stanza, including Megan Young, whose shot in the 24th minute was turned away by Rochester goalkeeper Bridget Lang.

Cami Crawford and Erin Haggerty also had opportunities to put NYU ahead in the first half, but ultimately neither could find the back of the net.

After 45 minutes of scoreless play, the Yellowjackets needed just 1:42 to take the lead in the second half. On a counter, Rachel Wesley sped down the right side and centered the ball to Coleman. Coleman then sidestepped her defender and fired a shot in the right side of the net.

Six minutes later, Coleman chased a loose ball inside the 18 and saved it on the endline. She then played a pass into the center of the box, where Hayley Engel touched it home.

Wesley and Coleman connected again in the 67th minute to make it 3-0. Coleman took a pass from Wesley, spun and fired a shot from 25 yards out into the lower left corner.

Leslie Smith had the Violets' best chance of the second half. But Lang charged on Smith's breakaway to break up a dangerous threat.

Meg Patten finished with five stops for the Violets, while Lang made three stops in 76:31 of action. Allison Bernstein relieved Lang to finish off the shutout.

NYU returns to action on Friday a Tear It Up! tilt with UAA foe Washington University. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
