The New York University's women's soccer team lost a 3-2 overtime thriller at Emory University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, October 30, in Atlanta, GA.
Emory (14-0-2, 5-0-1) entered the game ranked #5 in Division III by the NSCAA and #6 by D3soccer.com. The squad had allowed just two goals all season entering the game, but the Violets (11-6, 2-4) doubled that total in regulation.
The Eagles' clinched the outright UAA Championship with the win.
Despite being outshot 12-2 in the first half, the Violets jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a penalty kick by
Erin Ahmed. The goal was her sixth of the season.
Right before the end of the first half, the Eagles equalized on a long free kick that was put in by Lauren Gorodetsky.
In the 70th minute, the Eagles took a 2-1 lead on a corner kick tap-in by Lee Bachouros. However, it took the Violets only 60 seconds to respond, as
Erin Haggerty ripped a 25-yard blast into the back of the net. The 71st-minute goal marked the first time all season Emory had given up more than one goal in a game.
At the end of regulation, the Eagles had a 25-10 shots advantage, but
Meg Patten came up with big saves in the 82nd and 85th minutes to send the contest into overtime.
Just seven minutes into overtime, Emory's Lauren Drosick made a long run in which she scored the decisive goal, giving the Eagles the 3-2 overtime victory.
"We are obviously disappointed with the result, but I am proud of the effort we put out there against such a highly ranked opponent," said NYU head coach
Michele Canning.
For the game, the Eagles held a 27-10 advantage in shots. Patten totaled a career-high eight saves for NYU, while Erica Stein and Kaele Leonard combined for four saves for Emory.
The Violets close out the regular season at Brandeis University Saturday, November 5, in Waltham, MA. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
