Box Score

The New York University women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to nationally ranked University of Chicago in University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, October 16, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

The Maroons (7-4-2, 1-1-2), ranked #24 in Division III by the NSCAA, took the lead in the first half and added a pair of second-half goals before the Violets (9-5, 1-3) got on the board.

Serra Tumay scored NYU's goal in the 85th minute, as the Violets put pressure to get back into the game. Lined up just outside the box, the junior blasted a shot into the top left corner.

But NYU, which outshot Chicago 7-6 in the second half, could not pull any closer.

“We worked hard defensively, and there were times when we looked dangerous on attack,” said Violet head coach Michele Canning. “We just didn't finish our chances, and they did.”

A heads-up defensive play prevented the Maroons from finishing on a corner kick midway through the first half. Ellie von Storch aimed a header to the far left post, but Nicole Anzalone, perched on the post, headed it off the line to prevent the score.

Seven minutes later, however, Chicago broke through for its first goal. Beatrice Hobson played a pass to Micaela Harms on the right endline, and Kat Konstantinoff buried Harms' cross from point-blank range.

The Maroons added a pair of tallies in the second half. In the 64th minute, Meghan Derken played a back pass to Sara Kwan, who placed a shot inside the far right post. Katie Shivanandan then scored on a free-kick goal in the 83rd minute to make it 3-0.

Cami Crawford and Erin Haggerty had a pair of dangerous chances when the score was still 2-0, but neither could convert.

Emma Gormley totaled four stops for Chicago in goal, while Meg Patten and Jen Chuck combined for three saves for NYU. For the game, the Maroons held a 13-11 edge in shots and 9-4 in corners.

The Violets return to action on Tuesday, October 25, for their final home game of the season. They will host the City College of New York at 7:00 pm at Gaelic Park.
