Women's Volleyball Undefeated at the Labor Day Invitational

Violets Stay Perfect Through Three Matches on Friday

Kendyl Dunn led the team with 33 kills and hit .484 on the first day of the NYU Labor Day Invitational.

The New York University women's volleyball team swept all three of its matches on the first day of the 2010 season at the NYU Labor Day Invitational on Friday, September 3, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets, currently ranked #21 in the AVCA Division III Coaches Poll,  faced their toughest competition of the day, rallying back from a 21-17 deficit in the first set before going on to defeat the United States Coast Guard Academy 3-0 (26-24, 25-12, 25-20) in their final match.

"It's very exciting to have a great start to the season," commented head coach Chris Pinto.  "I feel like the players really progressed and gelled as a team as the day went on, which I felt really showed in that rally against Coast Guard."

Leading the way on offense for NYU in the match was Kendyl Dunn who put down a match-high 15 kills and hit .467 while adding four blocks and three digs on defense.

Also in double-digits for NYU was Jessica Prepolec who continued her stellar debut by putting down 12 kills while hitting .480 with eight digs.

Setter Mina Baban tied her career high for assists in a three-set match, putting up 40 while leading the offense to a .342 hitting percentage.

On defense, Alexis Schwartz and Rachel Sawyer both notched double-digit digs. Schwartz put up a team-high 19 while Sawyer added 10.

For the Bears, Lauren Bloch lead the team on offense and defense with 11 kills and 15 digs.

In the Violets' first match of the day, NYU easily defeated the Blue Jays of NYU-Poly in straight sets (25-13, 25-11, 25-18).

Prepolec led the way on offense, putting down a team-high 13 kills and hitting.357. On defense, the freshman put up seven digs and added four blocks, including a solo.

Dunn also put together a strong performance on offense with eight kills while hitting .500.

At the net, Sally Downs put up strong numbers, putting back a match-high five blocks while also adding five kills.

On defense, Schwartz notched a match-high 18 kills while also adding a team-best three service aces.

For the Blue Jays, Meredith Shipman and Victoria Kalvert both put down six kills while Marisa Mauerhan and Shipman both tallied 10 digs.

In the Violets' second match of the tournament, the team continued its domination of the day by knocking off the Knights of SUNY Geneseo 3-0 (25-17, 25-6, 25-15).

Leading the way in the match was Dunn, who notched a team-high 10 kills while hitting .500.

Middle blocker Kolby Warren also put together a strong offensive performance, putting down nine kills and hitting .692.

In the second set, Sawyer provided a boost on the back line by serving the first 13 points of the set to give the Violets a 13-0 lead. Overall, Sawyer tallied seven aces, tying her career high, while also adding nine digs.

Schwartz continued to provide a boost on defense by putting up a match-high 12 digs.

For the Knights, Krista Frieling put down six kills. Laura Galvin and Noelle Morrison each added nine digs.

The Violets return to action tomorrow for the second and final day of the NYU Labor Day Invitational with matches again SUNY Brockport and FDU-Florham.  Match times are set for 10:00 am and 2:00 pm, respectively.
