Women's Volleyball Takes Violet Classic

Violets Defeat Elmhurst and Hunter for Their 11th and 12th Consecutive Victories

The New York University women's volleyball team won its third tournament of the 2010 campaign by defeating Elmhurst College and Hunter College on the second day of the NYU Violet Classic on Saturday, September 25, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

With the victories the Violets (18-2) extended their winning streak to 12 matches, their longest such streak since 2006, and are off to their best start since the 2005 season, when they opened at 23-0 and eventually reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament.

In the first match of the day, the Violets pulled off one of their best wins of the season, defeating the Blue Jays of Elmhurst (10-6) in four sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-27, 25-17).

Tournament MVP Mina Baban played one of her best matches of the season, tying a season high with 51 assists while also recording a career-best-tying 16 digs and five kills.  For the weekend, the junior put up 113 assists (11.3/set) along with 26 digs and four service aces.

On offense, Kendyl Dunn led NYU with 17 kills along with two blocks including a solo.  Over the course of the weekend Dunn led the team with 28 kills while hitting .312 and recording two service aces and seven blocks in three matches.

Also in double-digits on offense were Jessica Prepolec and Beth Fionda, who both tallied 11 kills.

Recording her third double-double in four matches and fourth overall was Erin McLaughlin, who notched 12 kills and 14 digs.

On defense, Alexis Schwartz recorded a season-high 26 digs while serving up an ace and passing a perfect 25-for-25.  For the weekend, Schwartz put up a team-high 47 digs along with four service aces.

All-Tournament member Rachel Sawyer became the first NYU player in rally-scoring history to surpass 1,500 digs for a career with her 15 digs against the Blue Jays.  For her career Sawyer now has 1,522 digs.

For the Blue Jays, Meghan Mullaney recorded a match-high 22 kills while Perrie Morgan put up 30 digs.

In the final match of the weekend, the Violets breezed past the Hawks (5-6) in just one hour for the 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-14) victory.

On offense, Alex Mao recorded a match-high nine kills while hitting .643 and adding six digs.

Also putting together a strong offensive performance on Senior Day was Kasey Estes, who notched eight kills and four digs.

On defense, Jess Storer recorded a season- and match-high 10 digs.

Also notching 10 digs on defense was Sawyer, who posted her 11th double-digit dig performance in the last 12 matches.  For the weekend the senior tallied 46 digs along with a team-best nine service aces.

For the Hawks, Christine Luebcke recorded 10 kills and Mary Grace Vergara added 10 digs.

The Violets return to action this Wednesday evening for their final regular season home match of the 2010 season. They host Vassar College at 7:00 pm.
