Women's Soccer Falls on Pair of Second-Half Goals

Violets Can't Hang on to Halftime Lead

Leslie Smith continued to provide NYU with a boost off the bench against Vassar, tallying her second goal of the season as a reserve.

Box Score

The New York University women's soccer team took a 1-0 lead into halftime but ultimately fell 2-1 to Vassar College on a windy afternoon in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Friday, September 17.

The Violets' goal was a dramatic one, coming with just seven seconds left before halftime.  After a shot by freshman Leslie Smith was stopped, the Vassar keeper punted the ball to midfield, where junior Erica Jones won it.  With time winding down Jones put a ball wide to the left to send Smith back on goal, and this time she finished with a shot high over the goalie.

The fast pace of the end of the first half continued into the second, with NYU (2-5) generating several quality chances.  But the Brewers (4-2) took advantage of a foul in the box and converted an indirect free kick in the 61st minute to tie the score at 1-apiece.

Nearly five minutes later Vassar had another great chance, but sophomore Molly Henning made a fantastic play to keep the score even.  The Brewers sent a corner into the box, and after Sheeva Seyfi's initial shot was blocked she took another try that was cleared off the line by Henning.

But eight minutes later Seyfi would convert another strike, taking a long range shot that deflected off the post and in.  NYU had several chances to tie in the final 18 minutes, including a Jones attempt that was turned away, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Senior Alex Walters had a strong day between the pipes, making eight saves, two off her career high.

The Violets return to action on Sunday when they travel to Pennsylvania to take on Swarthmore College.  Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
