Women's Volleyball Takes Fifth at Nazareth Invitational

Violets Top SUNY New Paltz After Falling to #2 Juniata On Day Two

Kendyl Dunn tallied 23 kills on the second day of the Nazareth Invitational to garner her second All-Tournament honor of the young season.

The New York University women's volleyball team split its two matches on Saturday, the second day of the Nazareth College Volleyball Invitational, in Rochester, NY.

In the fifth-place match, the Violets (7-2), currently ranked #19 in the AVCA Division III Coaches Poll, outdueled their long-time rivals, the SUNY New Paltz Hawks (5-4), defeating them in straight sets (25-14-, 25-18, 25-16).

Leading the way on offense for NYU was All-Tournament member Kendyl Dunn, who put down a match-high 13 kills while hitting .471.

Also in double-digits on offense was Beth Fionda, who tallied 12 kills without recording an error for a .500 hitting percentage.  On defense, the junior put back four blocks.

At the net, Kolby Warren put together her best performance of the season, recording a match-high six blocks while also slamming home seven kills.

Along the back line, the Violets dug up a total of 74 balls, the third-highest number in a three-set match for NYU during the rally-scoring era.  Leading the charge was Alexis Schwartz, who put up 29 digs and set the NYU three-set digs record during the rally-scoring era.

Also recording double-digit digs for NYU were Jessica Prepolec (12), Natalie Fernandez (12) and Rachel Sawyer (11).

For the Hawks, Dana Vosilla, Melina DiGiovanna, and Kelly Lavender all had five kills, while Carrie Hack recorded 14 digs.

In the Violets' first match of the day, NYU dropped a tough match to the second-ranked Juniata College Eagles in straight sets.

The Violets could not get things started on offense against the 2009 national runner-up, as they lost 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-8).

Leading the offense for NYU was Dunn,  She put down 10 kills while hitting a team-high .318.

On defense, Schwartz tallied a match-high 14 digs.

For the Eagles, Amy Miller Recorded nine kills while Libby Morrison added 17 digs.

The Violets are back on the court on Wednesday night when they return home to the Coles Sports Center to take on Montclair State University.  First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
