Box Score
The New York University women's soccer team led the Stevens Institute of Technology 2-0 at halftime but ultimately lost a heartbreaker in overtime, 3-2, in the season opener at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, NJ.
The Violets needed just 1:18 to get on the scoreboard, scoring on their first shot of the game. Sophomore Serra Tumay sent a pass to senior Emily Jenkinson, and Jenkinson flicked a cross to classmate Rebecca Assing, who headed it in to give NYU an early 1-0 lead.
The Violets continued to apply the pressure in the first half, producing several quality chances before finally scoring again. After sophomore
Erin Haggerty made a fantastic play on the end line to keep the ball in play, senior
Jane Barrett won it in the area and got fouled, earning a penalty kick. Barrett then finished what she started, converting the penalty to stretch NYU's lead to 2-0.
NYU outshot Stevens 10-5 in the first half and produced three corners to none for the Ducks, but the second half was a different story. Stevens' offense awoke and finally found the back of the net in the 66th minute.
The Violets nearly extended their lead back to two just a few minutes later when Tumay sent a crisp pass to a wide-open Haggerty at the 18, but the charging Ducks' keeper wrestled the ball away.
That missed opportunity would come back to haunt NYU, as Stevens tied the score in the 75th minute on a bang-bang play. Neither squad mustered much offense the rest of the way before the Ducks ended the game in the second overtime period on a shot from deep inside the box that found the back left of the net.
The Violets return to action this weekend at the Richard Stockton Classic. They face Rowan University on Saturday at noon and the host Ospreys on Sunday at noon.
