NYU vs. Harvard Box Score
Bolstered by career highs in kills by three players, the New York University men's volleyball team survived a five-game thriller against Division I and EIVA Hay Division rival Harvard University on Saturday, April 10, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (5-17, 1-6 EIVA Hay) managed to outlast the Crimson (5-14, 3-3 EIVA Hay) 3-2 (27-30, 30-25, 23-30, 38-36, 15-11) in a match that included 45 tied scores and 14 lead changes to pick up their first Hay Division win of 2010.
Leading an offense that included four players putting up double-digit kill numbers was sophomore Pat Dodd who put down a career-high 21. On defense, Dodd also added nine digs and two crucial solo blocks.
Also putting up career numbers were both starting middles. Sophomore Luke Hamlet put together the best match of his young career, tallying a career-best 20 kills against only one error for a .576 hitting percentage. Junior captain Fran Hodgson also put up a career high, notching 19 kills and hitting .552 along with a team-high four blocks.
Rounding out the double-digit Violets was senior captain
Mike Ferragonio, who was honored in the Senior and Family Day ceremony before the match. He notched 10 kills while also adding a team-high three service aces. Ferragonio also put together one of his best passing performances of the season, giving up only one service ace on a match-high 57 reception attempts.
Junior captain
Ori Oren, who took over the starting setting duties midway through the season, missed a triple-double by a single kill. He put up a career-high 67 assists along with a team-high 13 digs and nine kills.
For the Crimson, Matt Jones led all players with 26 kills. Derek Jansma added 11 digs.
The Violets return to the court on Tuesday, April 13, when they host Division I and EIVA Hay Division rival New Jersey Institute of Technology in their 2010 season finale. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.
