Women's Soccer Suffers First UAA Loss

Violets Beaten 1-0 at Case

Rachael Ross has made a combined 10 saves in NYU's last two contests.

Box Score

The New York University women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Case Western Reserve University for the second straight year – despite again holding the advantage in shots and corner kicks – on Saturday, October 9, in Cleveland, OH.

The Violets (5-6-2, 1-1) outshot the Spartans (8-3-1, 1-1), who entered the game ranked #10 in the Great Lakes Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), 10-7 and held a 7-5 advantage in corners, but gave up the contest's lone goal in the 60th minute. Last year NYU lost 1-0 to Case on a goal with just 7:44 remaining.

The loss dashed the Violets' hopes of beginning 2-0 in the ultracompetitive University Athletic Association (UAA) for the second time in three seasons. It also snapped NYU's unbeaten streak at five, a stretch that lasted roughly three weeks.

Erica Sackett was the hero for the Spartans, turning and firing a shot from 20 yards out over goalkeeper Rachael Ross and into the net at the 59:17 mark. Violet forward Laura Palumbo put a pair of shots on net after Case took the lead, but both were turned away by keeper Anna Kennedy.

Palumbo and Jane Barrett were both nearly the heroes for NYU just four minutes into the second half. Palumbo fired a shot that struck the crossbar, and Barrett's rebound attempt was stopped by Kennedy.

Kennedy finished with six saves for the Spartans, while Ross turned away four shots for the Violets.

NYU returns to action next weekend with a home UAA doubleheader at the College of Staten Island. The Violets take on Emory University on Friday and Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday, with both games slated for 11:00 am starts.
