Women's Soccer Can't Make Lead Stand

NYU Falls 2-1 at Washington

Palumbo helped set up the Violets' goal and also played in her 77th career game, one shy of the school record

The New York University women's soccer team took an early lead but could not hold on and fell 2-1 at Washington University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Sunday, October 31, in St. Louis, MO.

The 2-1 defeat was the Violets' (7-9-2, 2-4) fourth straight by the score to the Bears (10-6-2, 3-1-2), who were receiving votes in the D3soccer.com Top 25 Poll this week. It was also another close heartbreaker for NYU in 2010, as six of its last seven losses have come by just one goal.

As she has done all season, Serra Tumay provided the scoring punch for the Violets, finding the back of the net in the 23rd minute. Laura Palumbo helped set the goal up with a hustle play, making a slide tackle to win possession back outside the box. Molly Henning corralled the loose ball and fed it to Tumay on the edge of the 18. The sophomore lofted a left-footed shot in the far upper right corner to put NYU ahead 1-0.

Washington responded exactly seven minutes later, as Jen Reed won a ball in the box off a corner and knocked it in past goalkeeper Rachael Ross.

The Violets nearly regained the lead with just four seconds left before halftime. Emily Jenkinson played a cross from the right sideline into the box that found Filiz Kipcakli all alone in front. But Clara Jaques stopped Kipcakli from point-blank range to keep the score knotted.

In the second half it was the Bears that broke through in the 56th minute, as Becky Berels won a ball in the box and chipped it in.

NYU's best chances to tie all came on free kicks. With fewer than 20 minutes to play Tara Kiernan played a free kick into the box that was just too far for a wide-open Leslie Smith. Just a few minutes later Tumay played a pair of free kicks into the box in the span of a minute, both of which forced Jaques to come out and punch the ball away from danger.

Ross finished with three saves in goal, including a big stop 11 minutes into the game from point-blank range.

The Violets close out the season on Saturday at home against Brandeis University at Gaelic Park in Riverdale. Game time is scheduled for 11:00 am.
