Box Score
The New York University women's soccer team twice came within inches of scoring the equalizer against first-place University of Chicago, but ultimately fell 1-0 on Friday, October 29, in Chicago, IL.
Serra Tumay had the first of those chances for the Violets (7-8-2, 2-3) just minutes after the Maroons (10-4-2, 4-1) took the lead on a breakaway goal by Natalia Jovanovic that trickled through goalkeeper
Rachael Ross' legs. In the 56th minute, Tumay ripped a high, arcing shot from 30 yards out that Emma Gormley just got enough of with her hands to tip it off and over the crossbar.
In the 81st minute,
Jane Barrett also just missed knotting the score.
Emily Jenkinson played a corner that bounced into the box, and Barrett charged and tapped a shot that hit the crossbar. NYU's ensuing rebound sailed high over the bar.
The chances were part of a strong Violet attack in the second half after Chicago kept the ball in the offensive end most of the first half. Ross made several huge stops to keep things scoreless in the first, including a pair just 32 seconds apart midway through the period.
The Maroons did put a ball into the net late in the first half. In the 35th minute, Claire Mackevicius bent a corner kick that hit the far post and went in. But, it was disallowed on a foul call in the box. Less than a minute later, Ross made a tremendous diving save to her left to keep Chicago off the board.
After the Maroons' goal early in the second half, NYU fired seven of its 11 shots while trying to mount a comeback. Just minutes after Tumay's near-goal, she appeared to be brought down in the box in a one-on-one situation, but no foul was called.
Ross added three more big saves in the final 15 minutes, including one in which she came out to make a kick save on a dangerous Chicago corner. Ross finished with seven saves.
The Violets return to action at Washington University, the 2009 NCAA national runner-up, on Sunday. Game time is scheduled for 11:00 am central time.
