The New York University men's fencing team had a successful day at the Eric Sollee Invitational at Brandeis University on Saturday, Jan. 30.
The Violets posted a winning record, going 4-3 and improving their record to 8-12 on the season. NYU took on a competitive field consisting of Haverford College, Air Force Academy, Boston College, host Brandeis, University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
The Violets began the invite with close losses to Haverford and Air Force, both by scores of 16-11. NYU bounced back, however, with a victory over Boston College (17-10).
NYU then faced its University Athletic Association rival Brandeis and defeated the hosts by an 18-9 score. The Violets picked up their victory with the help of 2-0 performances in sabre by seniors Jared Hammond and Sam Roukas, as well as a 3-0 outings by junior Oung-Jo Yuh and freshman Phil Jamesson in foil.
The Violets then fell to #6-ranked Pennsylvania in the fifth round by a score of 15-12. In the final two matches of the day, NYU nipped Brown 14-13 and took down MIT 18-9.
The top performer for NYU on Saturday was Jamesson, who posted a 16-4 record in foil with sweeps against Haverford, Air Force, Boston College and Brandeis. Junior Byron Neslund led the way in men's epee for the Violets with a 12-7 mark while Hammond had a 12-4 record in men's sabre on the day.
The Violets will be back in action Feb. 3, as they take on Columbia University, Vassar College and Sacred Heart University in a quad-meet host by Columbia.
