Box Score

Despite an otherwise cold-shooting night from beyond the three-point arc, Emory University made three big trifectas during a game-breaking, 15-1 run en route to a 69-57 victory over New York University in University Athletic Association (UAA) men's basketball action before 1,419 at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

NYU (10-5, 1-3 UAA) led 42-38 after Kyle Stockmal canned a three-pointer with 12:39 left and had forced the Eagles (11-4, 3-1 UAA), the fourth-best Division III three-point-shooting outfit with a 42.9% conversion rate entering the game, into 15 misses on their first 18 tries beyond the arc.

Although Emory made just 29.6% (8-for-27) of its long-distance tries, it got three treys at an opportune time. Alex Gulotta (6-for-10 FG, 5-for-7 3FG) scored a team-best 17 points and sandwiched two trifectas around a three-ball from Julien Williams, highlighting a 15-1 run that gave the visitors a 53-43 edge with 7:08 remaining.

Meanwhile, the Eagles denied NYU a field goal for 6:28 before an old-fashioned, three-point play by Richie Polan got the Violets within 53-46 with 6:10 left.

NYU got within 53-49 after Keith Jensen, who scored a game-high 18 points, buried a three-pointer from the wing with 5:22 remaining. However, Emory responded with two free throws by Austin Claunch (14 tallies, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) and another three-ball by Gulotta to surge ahead 58-49 with 4:02 to go.

From there, the Violets never pulled any closer than six points in suffering their third straight setback.

Anthony Fernandez added 10 tallies for Emory, which scored 24 points off 18 Violet turnovers.

Derek Becker scored 10 points and Chip Borsi added eight off the bench, all in the first half, as NYU shot 43.8% from the field while making just six of its 18 three-point attempts. The Violets were 9-14 at the foul line, but owned a 39-37 rebounding advantage.

NYU will host the University of Rochester on Sunday in the second contest of its four-game homestand. Tip-off time is noon.
