Jones Named Offensive MVP, Violets Capture Engineering Cup Crown

NYU Extends Win Streak to Four While Earning Second Straight Title at Stevens

NYU raises the Stevens Tech Engineering Cup high after winning it for the second-straight season.

Box Score

Sparked by Offensive MVP Erica Jones' second-half heroics, New York University recorded a 2-1 comeback victory over Allegheny College in the Sixth Annual Stevens Institute of Technology Engineering Cup on Sunday in Hoboken, NJ.

Jones finished with a goal and an assist, giving her five points in the tournament, as the Violets (4-1) captured their second straight Engineering Cup championship while earning their fourth-straight triumph.  Three of those wins have come by one-goal margins.

"Our players have worked really hard and deserve these wins," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said.  "They showed a lot of character coming from a goal down today and finding a way to win yesterday (against Ursinus College)."

NYU trailed 1-0 at intermission, but Jones helped shift matters into the Violets' favor.  She scored the equalizer on a free kick from just inside of midfield that bounced over Allegheny goalkeeper Emily Karr at 47:56, then secured offensive MVP honors by placing a free kick onto the head of Laura Palumbo at the 62:24 mark.

"She was very productive.  And she was dangerous with her free kicks," Dasbach said.

NYU weathered a few charges by Allegheny (3-2) thanks to strong defensive play from Katie Gaston and Cait Kilpatrick before forcing the action in the final five minutes, forcing the Gators to defend instead of pushing forward for a potential tying tally.

Alex Walters earned the victory in her first appearance this season, making four saves without allowing a score while playing the entire second half.  Rachael Ross started and made one save while allowing a Gator goal at 32:20 when Nicole Mascia converted an Alex Gordon corner kick.

NYU will look to extend its win streak to five when it hosts Vassar College on Friday, Sept. 18, at the College of Staten Island.  Opening kick is slated for noon.
