Men Tumble vs. Brandeis in Regular-Season Finale

NYU's Class of 2009: Bill Morrissey (left) and John Mish.

Box Score

John Mish recorded his 13th double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, but New York University suffered a 63-44 setback against University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Brandeis University before 1,790 on Saturday afternoon at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

Honored on Senior Day along with Bill Morrissey (8 points), Mish, the UAA leader in rebounding, notched his fifth straight double-double while hitting six of his 11 shots in 33 minutes for the Violets (15-10, 4-9 UAA).

A three-pointer by Zachary Kuba forged a 24-24 tie with 3:19 left in the first half, but Terrell Hollins scored five straight points during a half-ending 8-0 run that enabled the Judges (17-8, 10-4 UAA) to take a 32-24 halftime lead.

Brandeis' three-point shooting never enabled NYU to get close in the second half, as Kevin Olson (21 points, 7-for-8 FG, 5-for-6 3FG), Kenny Small (14 points, 2-for-3 3FG) and Steve DeLuca (13 tallies, 3-for-7 3FG) helped the victors convert 52.6% (10-for-19) of their shots from beyond the arc.

"I thought our guys battled," NYU head coach Joe Nesci said, "but you have to give credit to Brandeis."

NYU shot 36.7% (18-for-49), including 3-for-16 (18.8%) from three-point range, and 45.5% (5-for-11) of its free throws.  The Violets did own a 31-30 edge on the boards against Brandeis, which shot 44.4% (20-for-45).

From here, NYU will await word about a potential third consecutive Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metropolitan Tournament invitation.  The Violets won the 2007 ECAC Metro title.

"We're a little down about this loss, but the opportunity to play in the postseason is something we definitely have to appreciate," Nesci said.
