Lisa Verzino posted a 15-6 record, including three 3-0 marks.

After posting a 15-12 win over Tufts University on Saturday, the New York University women's fencing team traveled across town to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Sunday, Feb. 1 to compete in the Eric Sollee Invitational.

The Violets were joined by three teams ranked in the U.S. College Fencing Coaches poll: #7 Princeton University, #9 University of Pennsylvania and #10 Duke University, as well as MIT, Brandeis University and Boston College.

NYU won two of its six matches, making their overall record 8-12 on the season in duel meet competition.

The Violets faced their toughest competition in the first three rounds, going against the three ranked teams right away. In the first round, the Violets faced Princeton and dropped a 17-10 decision to the Tigers, despite 5-4 performances by both the sabre and foil teams.

NYU rebounded in the second round against Duke, posting a 16-11 victory. The team was backed by strong performances by the epee and sabre teams, who went 7-2 and 5-4, respectively.

After being swept by Pennsylvania in the third round 21-6 and again by host-school MIT in the fourth (16-11), the NYU sabre team came back in the fifth round against University Athletic Association rival Brandeis to post a 6-3 victory, although the Judges edged the Violets 14-13.

NYU finished the day with a sweep of Boston College 18-9, including a 5-4 effort by the epee team, a 6-3 victory in foil and a 7-2 mark in sabre.

The Violets' top performer for the day was freshman Lisa Verzino who compiled a 15-6 record in women's sabre, including three 3-0 marks against Brandeis, Princeton and MIT.

The women's fencing team will be back in action on Wednesday, February 11th, when they host Vassar College, Sacred Heart University and Columbia University.
