Violets Stopped By Brandeis, 1-0

Laura Palumbo had one of several second-half chances that just missed tying the game for the Violets.

Box Score

In spite of a spirited second-half charge, New York University could not net the trying goal and dropped a 1-0 decision Saturday to University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.

Playing their regular-season finale, the Violets (9-8-1, 0-6-1 UAA) outshot the Judges (9-6-3, 3-3-1 UAA) by a 19-12 margin and took 10 of the 13 corner kicks in the contest.

Shortly after intermission, Brandeis broke through with the game's lone goal, which saw Mimi Theodore head home a pretty cross by Melissa Gorenkoff at the 46:05 mark.

Almost immediately, the Violets countered and nearly netted the equalizer twice. However, Serra Tumay's shot was cleared off the goal line by Francesca Shin at 58:27 and, after a Tumay corner kick, Laura Palumbo lined a shot off the crossbar at 59:07.

NYU fired off three shots in the final seven minutes, but two sailed high and a third, which came off the foot of Filiz Kipcakli, was put aside by Hillary Rosenzweig (8 saves).

Alex Walters started between the pipes and made one save without allowing a goal. Rachael Ross played the final 45 minutes and stopped three shots while squandering the game's lone goal.

NYU will now wait until Monday for word regarding whether it will make its third consecutive appearance in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metropolitan Tournament. The Violets reached the 2008 championship game before falling to the Stevens Institute of Technology, 1-0, in Hoboken, NJ.
