NYU Fencing to Compete at Harvard Invitational

Violet to Face Top Teams in Nation

Byron Neslund will try to lead NYU this weekend.

This weekend the New York University men's and women's fencing squads will take on some of the top fencing teams in the nation at the Harvard Invitational on Nov. 29 in Cambridge, MA.

The round-robin event will be an all-day affair beginning at 10 a.m. and features top programs such as Harvard University, Princeton University, Vassar College, the University of North Carolina, Sacred Heart, and defending national champions Penn State University.

The Violets enter the Harvard Invitational with several bouts under their belts. On the men's side, NYU is 1-1 on the season after splitting a dual meet with Stevens Institute of Technology on Nov. 12. To kick off the season, NYU competed in the Temple Open against a large field where team members had impressive showings in each weapon. Freshman Phil Jamesson placed third in foil, junior Hugo Rodrigues placed sixth in sabre and junior Byron Neslund finished seventh in epee.

For the women, through one tournament and one head-to-head match this season the Violets have shown impressive outings, especially in foil. Both sophomore Rebecca Baird-Remba and junior Sophie Ciaravino are 6-0 in foil, while junior Amanda Rysling has a 4-0 tally in the weapon.

The defending national champions, Penn State, will be participating in the round-robin tournament. The Nittany Lions began their season at the Temple Open, Nov. 1. North Carolina also kicked off its year at the Temple Open. Princeton comes into the invite after having competed in one tournament, the Penn State Open, Nov. 21-22. Vassar already has 10 wins in 2009-10 and no losses, including five wins at the Vassar Invitational. Sacred Heart has competed in nine dual matches so far this season, and the invite will be Harvard's second competition of the season.

Results from Sunday's Harvard Invitational will be available at goNYUathletics.com when the meet finishes.
