Women's Fencing Splits Against Fairleigh Dickinson

Violets Come Back and Win Second Match

Amanda Rysling posted three wins in foil.

The New York University women's fencing team came up strong in the second match against Fairleigh Dickinson University to split two matches held at the Palladium Athletic Facility on Thursday night.

The Violets' "B" team won the second match by a score of 17-10, while the "A" team had a close loss, falling 15-12 in the first contest.

In the first match, Fairleigh Dickinson's sabre team posted a 9-0 shutout, but NYU was solid in the foil with an 8-1 victory and fell by a tight 5-4 margin in epee.

Sophomores Sophie Ciaravino and Rebecca Baird-Remba each won their three foil bouts. In epee, freshman Elizabeth Gyori recorded a team-high two victories in the first round, but it wasn't enough to overcome Fairleigh Dickinson's squad.

In the second match, the NYU foil team posted a 9-0 shutout, while the sabre and epee teams each were nipped by Fairleigh Dickinson 5-4.

In foil, junior Amanda Rysling, Baird-Remba and Ciaravino each had three victories,

Junior Victoria Sheng posted two wins in epee, while sophomore Lisa Verzino and senior Alyxandra Mattison posted the team's two victories in sabre.

The Violets return to action Nov. 20 when they compete against Columbia University.
