Despite a spirited effort that put the New York University women's soccer team 90 seconds away from an upset of Washington University, the Violets dropped a 2-1 decision to the nationally ranked Bears in overtime Sunday afternoon at the College of Staten Island Soccer Complex in Staten Island, NY.
Becca Heymann tallied 88 seconds into extra time off an Elyse Hanly assist as Washington (13-2-1, 5-0-1 UAA) -- ranked #8 in the D3Soccer.com Top 25 and #9 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division III National Rankings -- stayed atop the University Athletic Association (UAA) standings.
Before the Bears stormed back, NYU (9-7-1, 0-5-1) appeared poised to pull off its second upset of a top-10 team in as many years.
After being kept on the defensive by Washington's relentless attack, the Violets finally forged forward in the first five minutes of the second half. An Emily Jenkinson corner kick went onto Erica Jones' head and got cleared off the endline by a Bears' defender. However, Jenkinson collected the loose ball and slid it across to Filiz Kipcakli, who pushed it across the goal line for her team-best eight goal and a 1-0 NYU lead at 50:29.
From there, the Violets' backline cleared away numerous Washington advances until a foul in the 89th minute. This gave Lee Ann Felder a free kick from 20 yards out, which she bent it into the top-left corner with 90 seconds remaining in regulation, forging a 1-1 tie.
Washington owned a 19-10 edge on shots and a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Alex Walters made eight saves for the Violets. Clara Jacques made six stops for the Bears, who also got two team saves.
NYU will play its regular-season finale Saturday, Nov. 7, at UAA rival Brandeis University in Waltham, MA. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
