Propelled by Filiz Kipcakli's single-season-record-tying fifth game-winning goal of the season, New York University survived a back-and-forth battle with William Paterson University and posted a 2-1 victory in non-conference women's soccer play Wednesday night at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Kipcakli headed home an indirect kick from Erica Jones at 63:09 after a William Paterson (4-5-1) foul along the endline, snapping a 1-1 deadlock to tie Jennifer Farkas (2000) atop the single-season, game-winning goals chart. Her tally gave her eight winning scores in two-plus seasons, tying her for second on the Violets' (8-3-0) career list with Sarah Pillemer (2005-08).
"It's exciting. She had a great second half. She's a relentless attacker and she definitely deserves to be tying that record," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said. "With her continued effort, I expect her to break that record.
NYU struck first, finding the back of the net 9:33 into the action when Lucy Dolly Caires threaded a pretty through ball to Emily Jenkinson, who took two steps before beating William Paterson goalkeeper Erin Wydner 1 v 1 with a right-footed blast from 10 yards out.
William Paterson tallied the equalizer at 24:15 after keeping the ball inside the box following an Ali Ruddy corner kick. From there, Megan Droelle connected with Sam Giancola, whose blast into the top-right corner made the score 1-1. The Pioneers nearly pulled ahead on a few occasions during the latter part of the first half, but Rachael Ross (5 saves) stopped two point-blank shots by Kathleen Maggi and an attempt by Heidi Rogers clanged off the crossbar.
Alex Walters stopped two shots while playing the second half to improve to 3-0-0 this season. Erin Wydner made three saves in her first collegiate start for William Paterson.
Overall, the Violets owned a 12-11 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
NYU returns to action Saturday, Oct. 10, when it hosts University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Case Western Reserve University at the College of Staten Island. Game time is 1:30 p.m. and will preceded by the Violets' men's contest against Case Western.
