The New York University women's volleyball team out-killed Vassar College 42-18 on its way to a 3-0 sweep on Wednesday, September 17, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.

The Violets (11-2) came out strong against the Brewers (4-4), jumping out to a quick 10-2 lead behind three service aces from sophomore Annie Baer.  Vassar senior Katie Newton tried to keep it close with three kills and three blocks, but it was not enough as NYU cruised to a comfortable 25-15 victory in the first set.

In the second set, the Brewers came out aggressive, staying within three points for a while behind four kills from junior Caitlin Ly.  NYU turned it on at 18-15, however, taking seven of the final eight points including two kills from sophomore Erin Noonan to take the set 25-16.

The third set saw Vassar challenge NYU once again, holding a small lead up through 13-12 behind four kills from freshman Amy Bavosa. However, the final set was taken over by NYU freshman Elizabeth Dick.  When she took the ball back to serve, Vassar was leading by two. When her 12th consecutive serve sailed into the net for a service error, the Violets led 21-14, as they went on to take the final set 25-16.

"It was a good solid effort by our young team," commented head coach Ed Caesar after the match.  "The team keeps improving every match."

On offense for NYU, Noonan surpassed 100 kills for the season as she put down a match-high 13 and hit an astounding .765 while adding two blocks and two service aces.

Coming off her finest weekend of the season thus far, freshman Mina Baban continued her dominant play at the setter position, putting up 33 assists while leading NYU to a .315 hitting percentage.

Along with her impressive serving performance, Dick recorded six kills and eight digs, while freshman Britney Messier continued to bolster the NYU back line, putting up eight digs.

For the Brewers, Bavosa led the way on offense, putting down six kills, while Ly added five kills and hit a team-best .500.

On defense, Newton was a force at the net, putting down a match-high five blocks while also recording a team-high eight digs.

The Violets return to action this weekend when they travel to California to take on some of the top teams on the west coast, including the University of La Verne, which is currently ranked #3 in the AVCA Division III Coaches Poll.

"We have a huge weekend ahead of us," concluded Caesar.  "It's going to be a fun test for our young team."
