The New York University women's volleyball team swept St. John Fisher College to advance to the championship bracket of the RIT Tournament, Friday, September 12, in Rochester, NY.

The Violets (8-2) once again started slowly, falling behind the Cardinals (4-5) 7-2 early on.  NYU rallied however, tying the match at 14 before going on to win by the slim margin of 25-21.

The next two sets proved easier for NYU as they rolled to a 25-16 win in set two and a 25-13 win in set three.

Leading the way on offense for the second straight match was sophomore Erin Noonan who put down a match-high 11 kills while also adding a team-high three blocks.

Freshman Mina Baban kept the Violets clicking on offense, putting up 24 assists in the three sets while also digging up nine balls.

On defense, freshman Britney Messier continued her impressive weekend, digging up a match-high 15 balls.

In the first match of the day the team swept SUNY Geneseo for the second time in as many weeks.

The Violets got out to a slow start in the first set, finding themselves tied with the Knights (1-7) at 10.  NYU rallied behind freshman Kolby Warren's seven first-set kills to quickly pull ahead 18-12 en route to winning the first set 25-19.

In the second set, behind three kills from freshman Elizabeth Dick and four attack errors by the Knights, the Violets ran out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back, taking the set 25-14.

The third set proved tougher for the Violets.  NYU quickly found itself behind 7-2 before a rally by the Violets found the set tied at 12.  The two teams traded points the rest of the set with neither team taking more than a two-point lead.  After a 26-26 tie, a kill by senior captain Stacy Goto, followed up by a kill from Baban gave the Violets the set 28-26 and the match 3-0.

Noonan led the way on offense by putting down a match-high nine kills.  Warren, who rested the third set, finished the match with eight kills.

Baban led a strong Violet offense that out-killed the Knights 41-21, putting up 30 assists along with 11 digs for her third double-double of the season.
