Women’s Fencing Competes at the Vassar College Invitational

Sophomore Amanda Rysling posted an 8-6 mark in foil.

The New York University women's fencing team went 2-3 at the Vassar College Invitational in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Saturday.

The Violets faced off against three ranked opponents (according to the USFCA national poll): #1 Penn State University, 4 Harvard University and 8 Princeton University, as well as Templet University and host Vassar.

NYU's two victories put them at 4-3 for the season in dual-match competition.

The Violets started out strong, defeating their first two opponents. The first win came over Temple by a narrow 14-13 margin. The foil team led the way with a 7-2 mark, while the sabre team contributed a 5-4 win. Sophie Ciaravino and Lisa Verzino contributed 3-0 marks, respectively, in sabre and foil.

The Violets also defeated Vassar 15-12, with the foil team again posting an impressive score of 9-0. Foilists Ciaravino and Amanda Rysling each posted 3-0 marks, while co-captain Alyxandra Mattison went 3-0 in sabre. 

NYU dropped their last three decisions, falling 20-7 to Princeton, 25-2 to Penn State and 21-6 to Harvard.

Rysling was the Violets' top performer, finishing the tournament with an 8-6 record, including her 3-0 mark against Vassar.
