Women's Volleyball Sweeps Past RIT, Wins New York Regional Challenge

The New York University women's volleyball team completed a perfect weekend by sweeping the Rochester Institute of Technology at the New York State Regional Challenge on Sunday, Nov. 1, in Rochester, NY.

The Violets (22-13) and the Tigers (17-22) traded points early on before a RIT run at 10-10 put the Violets in a 20-15 hole. However, sophomore Kasey Estes put down three kills in four points to bring NYU within one at 20-19. The Tigers held the lead until a service ace by freshman Jillian Tremmel tied the score at 22. After a timeout by RIT, the Tigers committed three consecutive errors to give NYU the set at 25-22.

In the second set, NYU took an early three-point lead at 10-7 and ran with it, building its lead to six at 18-12. RIT rallied back, cutting the lead to 18-15 before a kill by freshman Crystal Douglas got NYU rolling again. The Violets went on to take six of the next nine points on their way to a 25-18 win.

The third set was completely dominated by NYU. The team took the lead for good 7-6 and never looked back, building its lead to 20-10. After that the Violets cruised, trading points with the Tigers on their way to a 25-15 victory.

At the net, sophomore Erin Noonan was dominant, putting down a match-high 12 kills while also hitting .391 with two blocks.

Estes was also in double-digits, recording 10 kills.

Along the back line, sophomore Rachel Sawyer continued her strong play, recording 19 digs and bringing her weekend total to 59 (4.75/set).

For the Tigers, Ashlie Baker was in double-digits with 10 kills, while Megan Henriksen put up a team-high seven digs. 

NYU's swept SUNY Brockport in its first match of the day.

The Violets came out firing against the Golden Eagles (14-21), never letting Brockport into the match. NYU swept the three sets 25-19, 25-16, 25-18, and hit .315 for the match.

On offense, freshman Elizabeth Dick hit a career-high .625 while putting down 11 kills, her 17th double-digit performance of the season.

Noonan was also strong on offense, putting down eight kills while hitting .357.

On the defensive side of the ball, Sawyer was the only player on either team to record double-digit digs in the match (11).

For the Golden Eagles, Alyssa Fitchette put down a match-high 14 kills while Bethany Schlegel recorded seven digs.

The Violets return to action next weekend when they travel to St. Louis to take part in the University Athletic Association Championship. The #7-seeded Violets will face host Washington University and Carnegie Mellon University on Friday, and Case Western Reserve University on Saturday in pool play. The team's final match on Saturday will be determined by its finish in pool competition.
