The second-seeded New York University women's soccer team championship aspirations were dashed with a 1-0 loss to top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology in the ECAC Division III Metro Tournament championship game on Sunday in Hoboken, NJ.
NYU (11-9-1) pressed forward consistently in the second half, finishing the contest with 10 corner kicks, but could not provide the equalizer after the Ducks (15-5-2) got on the board early.
Still, reaching the championship game quantified the continued growth of second-year head coach Werner T. Dasbach's program.
"We're proud of our effort the whole season. Getting this far is a fantastic result for the program," Dasbach said. "It's a disappointing result, but I'm proud of our fight and spirit."
"It means a lot. I'm really happy because we got better each year since I've been here, and I've gotten better each year," said senior
Sarah Pillemer, who graduated as the program's all-time leading scorer with 61 points. She is also tied for the career goals mark with 25.
Stevens got on the board 4:17 into the contest when Meghan Tennyson took a feed from Katria Misilo and bent a shot over Violet sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Walters' (seven saves) head from 28 yards out.
Overall, the Ducks owned a 15-9 edge on shots, while the Violets claimed a 10-6 advantage on corners.
Kaitlin McClymont made six saves for Stevens Tech.
