Sophomore Rebecca Assing contributed to both goals during a decisive, early 49-second outburst as the second-seeded New York University women's soccer team defeated #7 Rutgers-Newark, 3-0, in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Tournament action Wednesday night at the New Jersey Institute of Technology's Lubetkin Field in Newark, NJ.

Sophomore Filiz Kipcakli netted a pair of goals, giving her a team-best 10 tallies, as the Violets (11-8-0) advanced to Saturday's semifinal against #3 Montclair State University, a 3-0 victor over St. Joseph's College-LI.  Game time has yet to be determined, but the game will be played at Lubetkin Field.

In the process, NYU produced its first postseason victory since 2002, when it advanced to the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships' Sweet 16.

"It's a big step," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach said.  "It's a testament to the spirit of these girls, especially our senior class."

Assing started the NYU onslaught 4:00 into the action, tapping home a loose ball after Rutgers-Newark (9-9-2) goalkeeper Kat Renteria failed to corral a cross parried by sophomore Britta Gauthier.  Just 49 seconds later, a Kipcakli cross found the foot of Kipcakli, who banged the feed home.

"It's a testament to our players and their drive to be great," Dasbach said.  "It was a great spirited effort, especially in the first 20 minutes."

Kipcakli found the back of the net again at 73:12, depositing a corner kick struck by junior Lucy Dolly Caires.

Defensively, sophomore Alex Walters made five saves to preserve her fifth shutout, with help from the backline of senior Alyssa Simon and sophomores Katie Gaston and Cait Kilpatrick.

Renteria also made five saves for Rutgers-Newark (9-9-2), which was making its first-ever postseason appearance.

NYU outshot the Scarlet Raiders, 15-14, and owned a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks
