Filiz Kipcakli's volley found the back of the net 46 seconds into the second overtime, enabling the New York University women's soccer team to spring a 2-1 upset over University Athletic Association (UAA) rival and #10-ranked University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon at Manhattan College's Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.
Kipcakli's second tally of the contest capped a run upfield by sophomore
Laura Palumbo, who slid the ball to her classmate, who then struck the winning goal into the top-right corner of the net and set off a Violet (9-3-0, 2-0-0 UAA) celebration on the field.
In the process, NYU earned three firsts since 2002: its first victory over Rochester (8-2-2, 1-1-0 UAA), its first triumph over a ranked side and its first 2-0 start in Association play. Coincidentally, 2002 was the first and only season the Violets captured the UAA Championship.
"It just felt so good, the rush of energy. I didn't even realize I scored until the girls started celebrating," Kipcakli said. "It's one of the greatest moments."
"Pure excitement," NYU head coach Werner T. Dasbach called it. "What's exciting is that we have talked about moving into possibilities. To be honest, our players have talked about those game-winning goals earlier in the season and they went out and manifested it."
For victory to manifest itself, though, NYU needed to weather a furious last-minute charge by the Yellowjackets. With 61 seconds remaining in regulation, Ellen Coleman claimed a loose ball on the goal line and tapped it home to forge a 1-1 tie and force extra time.
Prior to that, the Violets possessed the best scoring chances in the contest and led 1-0, as Kipcakli found herself wide open on the far post to tap home a cross from senior
Sarah Pillemer 14:24 into the action.
Celeste Hornbach prevented NYU from increasing its advantage by making a point-blank stop of sophomore
Rebecca Assing's blast, one of her five saves on the day.
However, Kipcakli found the back of the net for her team-high-tying seventh goal, helping NYU snap a few streaks while potentially making a national name for itself.
"The first goal, I got chills. The second goal was the best feeling I've ever had," said senior tri-captain
Alyssa Simon, who led a defensive effort that helped the Violets outshoot Rochester, 13-9.
Sophomore
Alex Walters made four saves in the win for NYU, which returns to action next Friday, Oct. 17, when it travels to St. Louis to face #18 Washington University at 5:00 p.m. (Central Standard Time).
