Motivated by 782 cheering fans, the New York University women's volleyball team easily swept the Rochester Institute of Technology to move to 2-0 at the NYU Violet Classic on Friday, Oct. 10, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
In the first set, the Violets (16-6) built a 8-3 cushion off of five Tigers (13-16) errors. Errors continued to plague RIT throughout the early part of the set as NYU built a 20-10 lead behind four kills from sophomore Erin Noonan. RIT, however, mounted a comeback, whittling the score down to 24-21 before a service error gave the Violets a 25-21 win.
In the second set the Violets took control early, pulling out to a 9-0 advantage behind two service aces from senior captain Stacy Goto and three kills from Noonan. This time, however, NYU refused to allow RIT to come back. The Tigers came as close as five points at 15-10 before NYU reeled off 10 of the next 13 points, including five kills from freshman Elizabeth Dick as NYU took set two 25-13.
The third set saw RIT hold the score close by minimizing the errors that had hurt it the entire match. The Tigers pulled within one point at 20-19 off a kill from Vic Petko. However, the Violets took control following three kills from Noonan and went on the clinch the match with a 25-21 victory.
Noonan put down a match-high 17 kills while hitting .483. Dick contributed mightily with 14 kills while hitting .357.
Leading an NYU offense that out-killed RIT 47-24 was freshman Mina Baban, who put up 36 assists while adding four kills and eight digs.
Freshman Britney Messier put up double-digit digs for the eighth time in nine matches, registering 16 in the match.
For the Tigers, senior Heidi Little led the way with eight kills while freshman Megan Henriksen added 10 digs.
In the first match of the day, NYU rallied from a slow start an an 0-1 deficit to defeat Connecticut College 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-17).
Dick led the offense with a team-high 13 kills along with 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Junior Jess Storer and Warren both put down 10 kills, while Storer also hit a team-best .348.
On the back line, Messier continued her strong defensive play, putting up 21 digs while passing a perfect 22 for 22.
Also on defense, Goto reached a career milestone as she moved into second place all-time during the rally-scoring era in career digs with 1,081. She is now 75 behind current assistant coach Jennifer Gardikas, who holds the all-time record with 1,156.
For the Camels, freshman Any Newman led all players with 16 kills while junior Lauren Wise put up a team-high 14 digs.
The Violets return to action tomorrow for the second day of the NYU Violet Classic. NYU will take on 15th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 12:00 pm followed by SUNY New Paltz at 2:00 pm.
