The New York University men's tennis team defeated Rochester Institute of Technology 5–2 on Sunday, March 8, at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx, NY.
The Violets claimed the opening point by winning the doubles matches.
At No. 1, the duo of Bryan Hui and Niklas von Hellens earned a 6–4 victory. The No. 2 pairing of Jeh-Lei Fan and Shido Ito followed with another 6–4 win, while the No. 3 duo of Boris Slesarev and Rahul Sundaresan secured a 6–1 victory.
In singles play, the Violets secured the match with four wins across six courts.
Hui led the way with a 6–4, 7–6 (8–6) victory at No. 2, clinching the match with an 8–6 tiebreak. At No. 3, Ito earned a 6–1, 6–0 win, while Fan added a hard-fought 6–7, 6–2, 7–5 victory at No. 4. At No. 5, Slesarev secured a 6–1, 6–0 win.
"It was a great battle with RIT, with the match not decided until the final few courts," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "The last three matches went to three sets. They won at No. 6 to pull within 3–2 before Bryan pulled out an extremely close 8–6 tiebreak to clinch. Jeh-Lei closed out his match 7–5 to give us the final score. I'm proud of the way our guys fought all the way to the end and came through. We can't simulate these conditions in practice, so it was a good learning experience for everyone involved."
The Violets will return to action on Sunday, March 14, when they go against The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ.
