The New York University women's tennis team dropped a 5–2 decision to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Friday, February 27, in Cambridge, MA.
In doubles play, the Violets earned one victory but conceded the doubles point to MIT.
The No. 2 pairing of Emma Kast and Victoria Wang secured NYU's lone doubles win, edging their opponents 7–6 in a tightly contested set. MIT claimed the No. 1 and No. 3 courts by identical 6–2 scores to take the doubles point.
In singles competition, NYU continued to battle but managed just one win across six matches.
Vera Bondarenko delivered the highlight of the afternoon at No. 4 singles, grinding through a three-set victory. After dropping the opening set 6–3, Bondarenko responded with a 6–3 second set before closing out the match 6–3 in the third to secure the Violets' second point of the day.
Several other matches were tightly contested. Wang pushed her opponent to three sets at No. 1 singles before falling 6–4, 4–6, 6–2. At No. 3, Norah Staunton forced a deciding tiebreaker but came up just short in a narrow 6–4, 3–6, 13–11 defeat. Despite competitive efforts throughout the lineup, MIT ultimately sealed the 5–2 victory.
"It was a great early season test for both teams," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "I think we were not aggressive enough in the doubles but picked it up in the singles. Lots of close matches but MIT was able to edge us. I like the fight of our team and know that we will learn from today."
The Violets return to action on Saturday, February 28, when they travel to Babson Park, MA, to take on Babson College.
