The New York University men's tennis team opened its 2026 spring season in strong fashion with a 5–2 victory over Union College on Sunday, February 22, at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx, NY.
NYU claimed the opening point by sweeping doubles play.
At No. 1, Bryan Hui and Niklas von Hellens earned a 6–3 victory. The No. 2 duo of Jeh-Lei Fan and Shido Ito matched that score with a 6–3 win, while Rahul Sundaresan and Boris Slesarev secured a 6–2 triumph at No. 3.
The Violets clinched the match with four singles victories.
At No. 1, von Hellens led the way with a 6–3, 6–2 win, and Hui followed with a 7–5, 6–1 victory at No. 2. At No. 5, Cooper Kline outlasted his opponent in a thrilling third-set battle, rallying for a 3–6, 6–3, 13–11 victory. Boris Slesarev added a 6–1, 7–6 win at No. 6.
"It was a great match to start the season," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "We took command early, sweeping the doubles. But, Union wouldn't go away. Niklas won his singles handily and gave us the 2-0 lead. Bryan extended us to 3-1, but it was a battle to get our last points. Cooper came up big in the super tiebreaker to clinch the match and Boris won his closely contested match. Guys showed a lot of fight and. It was a well-earned victory."
The Violets return to action on February 27 when they travel to Cambridge, MA, to face the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
