Men's Swimming and Diving Successful at MIT Tri-Meet

Violets Record Wins Over Engineers and Ephs

The #3-ranked New York University men's swimming and diving team swept its tri-meet against #6 Massachusetts Institute of Technology and #14 Williams College on Friday, January 23, in Cambridge, MA.

The Violets won by scores of 165-135 and 221-78 over the Engineers and Ephs, respectively.

"I'm really proud of how the men responded after losing the 400 medley relay," said Head Coach Trevor Miele.

As a team, NYU recorded nine first-place finishes, eight of which were individual.

Evan Jue led the afternoon off with a time of 15:40.49 in the 1650-yard freestyle to take first place by just under two seconds.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Teddy Cross won with a time of 49.28, which edged out second place by 0.30 seconds. Additionally, Cross topped the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:48.01.

Pierce Downs also won a close race with a top finish in the 100-yard freestyle. His time of 45.85 was just 0.08 seconds ahead of second place.

The 200-yard butterfly came down to .24 seconds between first and second place, as Leo Han earned the win with a time of 1:51.80. Han's 100-yard butterfly victory was even closer, with the senior taking first place by 0.12 seconds over fellow Violet Teddy McQuaid

Victor Derani added on to the NYU's tally with the top time in the 200-yard breaststroke, coming in at 1:05.10.

In the 400-yard IM, Maksym Nechydyuk registered a first-place finish with a time of 3:57.16.

The afternoon came to a close with the 200-yard freestyle relay, in which Downs, Cross, Stone Miller, and Greg Wehbe won with a time of 1:21.89.

Additionally, Nolan Jennings highlighted the diving portion of the meet with four-place finishes in both the one and three-meter dive.

"Pierce's win in the 100 free was a great example of his competitive toughness, and the way the guys finished the meet in the 200 free relay was outstanding," added Miele. "Evan's 1650 with an NCAA cut, Max dominating the 400 IM, and Leo sweeping the fly events showed how deep and versatile this group is right now. At this point in the season, I'm very happy with where we are and how we're progressing."

While the swimmers will not compete again until the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, the divers will take part in the Ithaca College Invitational on Sunday, January 25, in Ithaca, NY.
