Members of the New York University men's tennis team opened the 2025-26 season with competition against players from Ithaca College at the TCNJ Lions Tournament on Saturday, September 20, in Ewing, NJ.
The no-team-scoring contest included singles and double matches. The Violets walked away victorious in all five doubles matches, and six of the nine singles matches.
"I'm very happy with how this first day went. The team had good energy and we got off to a great start," said Head Coach Horace Choy.
In doubles, three pairs of teams won their match 8-5. Philip Martin and Pierre Boullenger, Bryan Hui and Shido Ito, and the pair of Kaustav Guttikonda and Rahul Sundaresan. The last two doubles matches went to tiebreak as the pair of Rafael Zard and Boris Slesarev won their match 8(7)-7(5), and the duo of Jeh-Lei Fan and Andy Chen were victorious 8(9)-7(7).
Of the six singles matches the Violets won, four were taken in straight sets: Martin (7-5, 6-3), Slesarev (6-3, 7(7)-6(5)), Chen (6-2, 6-2), and Sundaresan (7-5, 6-1).
"We have a lot of new people on the team and it was great to get contributions from everyone," Choy added. "I liked what I saw in how our team competed and I am interested to see how we respond tomorrow."
The two-day invitational will continue on Sunday with NYU facing players from host The College of New Jersey.
