Boren Zheng represented New York University at the NCAA Division III Men's Individual Tennis Championship on Friday, May 23, in Claremont, CA.
In his opening match of the 32-player, single-elimination tournament, the NYU junior faced #5 seed Ethan Green of Denison University.
Zheng played efficiently throughout the match, getting off to quick leads in both sets, never trailing, and going on to grab a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
"Boren played well against a tough player," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "He led start-to-finish and didn't really let his opponent into the match. He served very well and pushed his opponent on every return game."
In the Round of 16, Zheng faced Chakor Rajendra of Johns Hopkins University.
The first set was grueling, going to a tiebreaker as Zheng fell 7-6.
He fell behind 5-1 in the next set, but battled until the end. He could not overcome the early deficit, however, and dropped the final set 6-3.
"His opening win was great, but he didn't have any time to savor it with the second match approaching," Choy added. "It was a tough loss. He had chances in the first set, but just couldn't capitalize."
NYU's #1 singles player ends the 2024-25 campaign with a 17-7 record and All-America accolades.
"Boren had another strong year for us," Choy concluded. "Playing at number one singles and number one doubles gives you all the toughest matches and he came up big for us all season. Qualifying for NCAA's was a bonus for him, but not a goal. His goal was to help the team to its best year and he did that."
The Violets finished the season with an 11-4 dual-match record.
