The New York University men's tennis team came up short in a 4–2 loss to Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon. The match, held in Cambridge, MA, was played to decision, leaving a singles match unfinished once MIT clinched the win.
MIT grabbed the early momentum by taking two of three doubles matches to earn the opening point. NYU's lone doubles win came at the No. 2 spot, where Philip Martin and Boren Zheng posted a 6–3 victory.
In singles play, Martin earned NYU's first point with a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles, 6–3, 6–3. Cooper Kline added the second point for the Violets at No. 6, rallying for a 3–6, 7–6, 1–0 victory.
Zheng battled at the top spot but ultimately fell in three sets, 3–6, 6–3, 7–5.
MIT secured the overall win with victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, while the match at No. 5 went unfinished once the Engineers clinched the team result.
"Our guys are definitely disappointed, but they competed all the way through," said Head Coach Horace Choy. "In college tennis, the margins are incredibly small—if one team is locked in and the other isn't, anything can happen. I know this group will refocus and be ready to close out the season strong."
The Violets will return home next Sunday, April 13, for Senior Day against the University of Rochester. First serve is scheduled for 1:00pm at the Stadium Tennis Center in the Bronx.
