The NYU men's swimming and diving team concluded the 2025 NYU Fall Invitational on Saturday, November 8, with two final sessions to close out the weekend.
The Violets maintained their day-one lead, taking first with 578 points, followed by Stevens (256) and Drew (225). The divers from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) totaled 26 points in their two events.
NYU kicked off the Saturday morning session with a win in the 200 medley relay. The Violets' "A" team (
Teddy McQuaid,
Maksym Nechydyuk,
Derek Young,
Greg Wehbe) was just over half a second faster than the Stevens "A" relay, finishing in 1:33.97.
McQuaid secured consecutive victories with his win in the 100 butterfly. He held off the top swimmers from Stevens and Drew with a 50.72 swim, half a second faster than the field.
In the 400 individual medley, Nechydyuk was just under four seconds clear in first place with a 4:05.39 time.
Evan Jue (4:09.11) and
Sebastian Wenger (4:14.16) took second and third for the Violets.
Misha Kabunov posted a decisive victory in the 200 freestyle, finishing in 1:43.78 - nearly two seconds ahead of second place.
Victor Derani (1:45.79) and
Adam Mekrami (1:45.82) rounded out the top three.
Stevens' Angel Velasquez pulled out a win in the 100 breaststroke, besting NYU's
Sean Li (58.13) by just 14 milliseconds.
Youngsoo Ahn-Song took third with a 58.28 finish.
The Violets scored the top three in the 100 backstroke, with strong performances from McQuaid (51.63),
Jacob Lee (53.27) and
Stone Miller (54.69).
The three Violet relay teams finished in order in the 800 freestyle relay to finish the morning session. NYU's "A" relay (Kabunov, Nechydyuk, Derani,
Bryan Manheimer) out swam the field by nearly six seconds, finishing in 7:03.49.
After the final relay of the morning session, the divers kicked off the one-meter competition.
Makai Harder (260.18) scored the win, followed by
Nolan Jennings (249.90) and TCNJ's Josh Bouchard (200.93).
"Makai had a great meet, just missing the NCAA Regional qualifying score, but he made huge improvements this week," said Diving Head Coach
Todd Kolean. "Overall, I think we're probably ahead of where I thought we would be at this point of the season."
In the opening race of the afternoon session, Jue paced the field in the mile swim. He put nearly 13 seconds between himself and second place, finishing in 16:03.79. Mekrami (16:16.52) and Stevens' Cooper Moffatt (16:36.74) round out the top three.
NYU scored first and third in the 200 backstroke, split by Ethan Emerton of Stevens. McQuaid (1:51.82) touched the wall first with
Hodge Dauler taking third (1:55.35).
Li held NYU's best time (47.47) in the 100 freestyle, taking third, just five milliseconds ahead of teammate
Greg Wehbe (47.52).
Nechydyuk secured a win for the Violets in the 200 breaststroke by nearly four seconds, clocking in at 2:05.61. NYU's
Conner Dean (2:10.38) finished just off the proverbial podium in fourth place.
The final individual race of the day came down to the final touch. Drew's Marcell Hudak (1:55.44) just bested Lee (1:55.50) for the win in the 200 butterfly.
Saturday's action ended with an "upset" in the 400 freestyle relay. The NYU "B" relay (
Sean Li, Young,
Hector Mu,
Teddy McQuaid) out swam the Violets "A" relay by just 36 milliseconds to win the final race of the Invitational in 3:07.51.
The Violets return to action at the Phoenix Fall Classic, hosted by UChicago, Nov. 21-23.
