The New York University men's swimming and diving team finished competition at the Phoenix Fall Classic in Chicago, IL, on Sunday, November 23.
The
eighth-ranked Violets cruised to a first-place finish, totaling 2,697 points over the three days. They outscored second-place Washington University in St.Louis by nearly 700 points, which finished with 1,906.5.
Opening the final night on a high note was
Teddy McQuaid (1:44.47), who earned first place and an NCAA "Q" cut in the 200-yard backstroke.
In the 100-yard freestyle,
Pierce Downs (43.99) took second place while
Greg Wehbe (44.78) followed behind in third. Downs earned an NCAA "Q" cut while Wehbe notched a "B" cut.
Three Violets placed in the top five and earned NCAA "Q" cuts in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Maksym Nechydyuk (1:58.12) led the way in first place,
Conner Dean (1:59.10) took third, and
Victor Derani (1:59.58) finished in fifth.
NYU's 400-yard medley relay squad took second place in the final swim of the evening. Downs, Wehbe,
Stone Miller, and Nechydyuk earned an NCAA "Q" cut with their time of 2:57.14.
"Our men were great all weekend. They crushed it," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "It was a strong and confident three-day effort from the whole group."
The top diver for NYU was
Nolan Jennings, who placed fourth in the one-meter dive, scoring 403.15 points.
"I'm happy where we are at this point in the season," said Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "Nolan and our team continue to improve."
The Violets return to action on Friday, December 5, at 10 a.m, as the divers compete at the RPI Go Red Invitational in Troy, NY. The next day, both swimming and diving will compete in a tri-meet hosted by NYU at the Palladium Athletic Facility. Diving begins at 10 a.m. while swimming is set for 1 p.m.
