The
eighth-ranked New York University men's swimming and diving team continued competition at the Phoenix Fall Invitational in Chicago, IL, on Saturday, November 22.
The Violets extended their first-place lead, ending the day with 1,768.5 points. They are well ahead of Washington University in St.Louis, which is in second place with 1,229.5 points.
The night started strong as the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.65) of
Teddy McQuaid,
Maksym Nechydyuk,
Hector Mu, and
Greg Wehbe secured first place and an NCAA "Q" cut.
Pierce Downs had a record-breaking swim in the 200-yard freestyle, setting a new NYU mark of 1:37.61. He took second place and secured an NCAA "Q" cut.
Five Violets earned NCAA cuts in the 400-yard IM. Nechydyuk (3:49.12) led the way in first place and notched an NCAA "A" cut.
Conner Dean (3:53.09),
Victor Derani (3:53.77),
Sebastian Wenger (3:55.94), and
Evan Jue (3:56.99) followed suit in second, fourth, sixth, and eighth, respectively.
McQuaid notched two NCAA "Q" cuts, finishing first in the 100-yard backstroke and taking second in the 100-yard butterfly (47.57).
"Our men delivered a great session and and we picked up cuts in every event," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "Max was outstanding getting the win in the 400 IM. Teddy had a huge night as well, taking second in the 100 fly and coming back to win the 100 back."
Makai Harder was the top performer in diving for NYU. He took fourth place and amassed 386.55 points.
"This was our first meet doing 11 dives in a big event and it's the first time our divers did all their hard dives," said Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "The men were pretty good today and I thought Makai was especially good."
The Violets round out the Phoenix Fall Classic tomorrow as they look to maintain their lead on the final day of competition. Swimming will take place at 10:00 a.m. CT and 5:00 p.m. CT, while diving is set for 1:00 p.m. CT.
