The New York University men's swimming and diving team kicked off the Phoenix Fall Classic hosted by the University of Chicago on Friday, November 21.
The
eighth-ranked Violets had a strong start to the meet, finishing the day in first place with 717 points. They are well-ahead of Washington University in St. Louis, who is currently in second place with 542 points.
The top performer for the Violets was
Maksym Nechydyuk, who secured first place and an NCAA "Q" cut in the 200 yard IM, logging a time of 1:47.19.
Conner Dean also earned an NCAA "Q" cut with a time of 1:49.43.
Greg Wehbe and
Pierce Downs both clocked in at 20.20 in the 50 yard freestyle, each earning NCAA "B" cuts.
Both the 200 yard freestyle and 400 yard medley relay teams earned NCAA "Q" cuts. Competing in the second-place 200 yard freestyle relay (1:20.26) was Downs,
Stone Miller,
Daniel Gustin, and Wehbe. The 400 yard medley squad of
Teddy McQuaid, Nechydyuk,
Hector Mu, and Wehbe took second place with a time of 3:15.06.
Misha Kabunov (4:30.18),
Adam Mekrami (4:30.19), and
Blake Wang (4:30.61), and all notched NCAA "B" cuts in the 500 yard freestyle.
"The team showed up ready to race today," said Head Coach
Trevor Miele. "I'm excited to see how the rest of the meet goes."
The Violets continue competition at the second day of the Phoenix Fall Classic tomorrow,. Swimming events are set for 10:00 a.m and 5:30 p.m CT while diving begins at 1:00 p.m. CT.
