The New York University men's tennis team began competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships on Friday, October 3. The three-day competition is being hosted by Skidmore College in Saratogoa Springs, NY. 

The Violets saw both Philip Martin and Bryan Hui advance to Saturday's session in the singles draw.

Martin won both his matches of the day handily, first beating Nicholas Oh from Bard College 6-0, 6-1, than moving on to defeat Jacob Linares from Hobart/William Smith College 6-3, 6-2. Hui had similar success in his two matches, beating Alexei Katelevsky from Hamilton College 6-4, 6-4, and then winning 6-4, 6-3 against  Joshua David from St. Lawrence College.

Pierre Boullenger, Shido Ito, and Kaustav Guttikonda also participated, but were unable to win their first round matches. 

In the doubles draw, Martin and Boullenger combined to win their first match against a duo from Rochester 8-6, before falling to Yu Tanimoto and Alexander Sinclair from Rochester Instituite of Technology 8-1 in the second round. 

The pairs of Hui and Ito, and Guttikonda and Seiya Kudo lost their first round matches 8-6. 

"Phil and Bryan had a good first day in singles. Both managed to navigate it with minimal drama and conserving energy for the harder matches yet to come," Head Coach Horace Choy said. "While the matches are harder, both are playing and competing well. "

Martin and Hui will continue their ITA Northeast Regional Championship campaign during tomorrow's session, which is set to begin at 8am.
