The New York University men's basketball team,
ranked #6 in the nation, defeated host Carnegie Mellon University 96-90 on Friday, January 24, in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Violets (14-1, 3-1) trailed the University Athletic Association (UAA) contest 75-74 with 5-1/2 minutes to play, but used a 13-3 run to open an 87-78 lead with just over two minutes remaining.
The Tartans (10-5, 1-3) pulled within four, 87-83, but
Zay Freeney hit a pair of free throws with 1:03 left.
Again Carnegie Mellon got within four, 89-85.
Jack Stone followed with two free throws and
Bryan Moussako made two more with 17 ticks remaining to secure the victory.
Stone, back in Pittsburgh after playing three seasons at Carnegie Mellon, led the Violets with a season-high 27 points.
Tristan How posted a double-double with 24 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Freeney (14) and
Brock Susko (13) also scored in double figures for NYU.
The Violets return to action on Sunday when they travel to Cleveland, OH, for another UAA contest against Case Western Reserve University. Tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
