The
#1-ranked New York University men's swimming team returned to home water on Saturday, January 18, defeating Gettysburg College 186-71, and bringing their record to 7-0.
It was a quick turnaround for the team, after strong performances in Williamstown, MA, on Friday, January 18, beating Williams College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
"They had a dominant meet today, and it was great to see them step up and race hard after yesterday's competition," said Head Swimming Coach
Trevor Miele.
The Violets celebrated Senior Day and the national champions from last season, including current
Assistant Coach Derek Maas for his performances as a graduate student in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and the 200 IM at the NCAA Division III Championships.
Senior swimmers
Gavin Egerton,
Sam Lucas,
Gustavo Ott,
Benjamin Russell,
Connor Vincent,
Ajay Watanakun, and
Jaeden-Hans Yburan were honored before the meet.
"This class has brought a lot of energy to the program," said Miele. "They've led vocally and by example, and worked really hard."
While the divers didn't compete, they were still honored.
Mitchell Mortenson and captain
William Hopkins are both graduating this season.
"I'm sad to see them go," said Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "They've progressed so much further than I could've imagined."
In Saturday's competition, Vincent won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events.
"He had a fantastic day," said Miele. "As a graduating senior, he's been such a steady presence for our team, and it's exciting to see him finish strong."
Maksym Nechydyuk placed first in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, showing that he is "reliable and well-rounded," according to Miele.
Nechydyuk has been named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week twice this season.
Shyam Soundararajan claimed victory in the 50-yard freestyle.
"He was really impressive in the 50 free and had a great swim in the 100 fly as well," said Miele. "He's been working hard, and it's paying off in these races."
The Violets will return to the pool on Saturday, January 25, when they travel to West Chester, PA, to face West Chester University of Pennsylvania.
