Spencer Freedman of New York University's men's basketball team has been named the Region 4 Player of the Year and First Team All-Region 4 by
D3hoops.com and Third Team All-America by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
Freedman also landed on the NABC's District 4 First Team after helping lead the Violets to their first University Athletic Association (UAA) title in 30 years and first season with 10-plus UAA wins (10-4) in over 25 years.
The California native led NYU and ranked third in the UAA in scoring average (18.4) while his 5.8 assists per game were good for 10th in all of Division III. Freedman also tied for first in the UAA in three-pointers made (77), was second in three-point percentage (41.6) and third in field-goal percentage (49.3). He also averaged 4.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game, starting all 27 of NYU's games.
Freedman scored in double figures in all but five of his appearances, dropping 20-plus points 11 times and logging three outings of 30-or-more points. He had a stretch during league play from January 19 to February 2 in which he scored 20-plus in five straight, capped off by 31 points against Rochester.
The graduate student scored a career-high 35 points on 14-of-23 shooting and 5-of-10 from deep against WashU on February 16 and poured in 29 points in the Violets' NCAA Tournament first round win over Husson.
Freedman also dished out five-or-more assists on 20 occasions, including a career-high-tying 11 against Redlands on November 25 and a 20-point, 10-assist double-double versus Emory on January 28.
Freedman adds these accolades to his UAA Player of the Year and First Team All-UAA honors this season, as well as his selection to the Reese's Division III College All-Star Game on Saturday, March 16, in Fort Wayne, IN.
