Men's Swimming Takes on TCNJ and Johns Hopkins

Han Wins 200 Fly and 200 Back to Lead NYU

New York University's men's swimming team competed against The College of New Jersey and host Johns Hopkins University on Tuesday, January 16, in Baltimore, MD.

The Violets defeated TCNJ (165-97) and fell to Johns Hopkins (161-101), pushing their record to 4-1 in dual meets this season.

"I thought we swam well for this time of the season," said Head Coach Trevor Miele. "We posted a lot of solid swims and raced well."

Leo Han shined for NYU, winning both the 200 fly (1:51.38) and 200 back (1:52.10) while finishing 2.51 seconds off his program record and placing second in the 100 fly (49.84).

"Leo had a hell of a meet, he's been working really hard and it was fantastic to see him swim so welI," Miele added. "I thought the guys raced well and had some good times for a post-training trip meet."

Jaeden-Hans Yburan also picked up a victory, coming first in the 200 IM (1:54.06) along with a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (51.55).

In the opening 200 medley relay, NYU's squad of Han, Derek Young, Ajay Watanakun and Greg Wehbe finished second by just less than two tenths of a second with a combined time of 1:32.74.

Connor Vincent was the Violets' top scorer in the 1,000-yard freestyle, completing the race in 9:45.77 for second while Zachary Spain came in fourth (9:57.56). Vincent also claimed second in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.18.

Kevin Wu posted a pair of third-place finishes, in both the 200 (1:43.08) and 100 (47.05) freestyles. In the 50 free, Watanakun (21.47), Wehbe (21.62) and Damian Baranowski (21.72) went 3-5 to score for the Violets.

Victor Derani led the way in the 200 breaststroke, taking second after touching in 2:06.64. The 400 freestyle relay concluded the meet and saw Watanakun, Wu, Pierce Downs and Wehbe come in third (3:08.18).

The NYU divers did not compete on Tuesday, but will be back in action this Saturday, January 20, at the RPI Kumpf Diving Invitational in Troy, NY.

The swimmers are back in the pool on Friday, January 26, when they compete at MIT in Cambridge, MA.
