New York University's
third-ranked men's swimming & diving team completed its home-and-home sweep of the Stevens Institute of Technology with a 264-51 victory on Saturday, January 13, at NYU's Palladium Natatorium in Manhattan.
NYU swept all events on Saturday, as the Violets celebrated Senior Day
The competition started with NYU taking the top five places in the 200 medley relay, with the quartet of
Derek Maas,
Emmett Ralston,
Leo Han, and
Ajay Watanakun winning the event
in a time of 1:32.84.
Connor Vincent led the top-eight NYU finishers in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:41.80
.
In the 200 breaststroke, Maas was first (2:03.95
) as NYU claimed the top four spots.
Han returned to win the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:50.76
.
The Violets went top-four in the 100 freestyle as Watanakun paced the field (46.46
).
In the 200 butterfly, NYU took the top-three spots with Sam Lucas leading the way in 1:56.69.
In the 400 IM, Violets all finished among the top five with
Jaeden-Hans Yburan taking the top spot (4:08.15).
The Violets concluded the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay (3:06.48
), as Han, Wantanakun, Greg Wehbe, and Maas distanced the field.
"Coming off a pretty rigorous training trip, we swam pretty well over the two days," said Head Swim Coach
Trevor Miele. "We have a lot of work ahead of us, but overall it was a solid performance."
The divers also competed prior to the swimming events.
Will Hopkins posted the highest scores in both the three-meter (293.03) and one-meter (306.08) dives, while
Makai Harder was runner-up in both (280.73 and 287.70, respectively).
Mitchell Mortenson and
Sahil Das also competed.
"Will continued his strong season by winning both events and Makai made his first qualifying scores on both boards," said Head Diving Coach
Todd Kolean. "Mitchell also made the score on the one-meter (283.68). Senior
Sahil Das dove well is his return from Florence."
Prior to the swim competition, the team honored graduating seniors
Damian Baranowski, Das,
Jack Rogers, Phil Scarim, Zach Spain, and Tyler Waletrs, as well as Maas who is competing as a graduate student in his final season of eligibility.
The Violets return to the pool when they compete at Johns Hopkins University this Tuesday, January 16, at 1:00pm in Baltimore, MD.
