Members of the New York University men's tennis team began competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region Championships, which are being held Friday-Sunday, September 29-October 1, at Drew University in Madison, NJ.
On Friday's opening day, all three of NYU's singles players, as well as the one doubles team, were all victories.
Due to the severe weather conditions, all of the day's matches were played indoors and to one pro set.
"It was a good day for the team," said Head Coach
Horace Choy. "We got some good results even though the play was a little uneven. Being forced indoors and changing the format a little was difficult. Our guys adapted and got through."
The Violets'
Boren Zheng, who is the #4 seed, defeated Josh Finkle of Skidmore College 8-4.
Rumaish Khastgir won an 8-3 decision over Krish Vennam of the University of Rochester, while
Jingyuan Chen was an 8-6 winner over Cole Hamilton of St. Lawrence University.
In doubles play, Zheng and
Alexander Lee defeated their opponents from Hobart College 8-4.
"Rumaish played a very solid match and pulled out a good win," Choy added. "Alex and Boren had a tight match, but pulled it out as they did so often last year. Jingyuan got off to a slow start but battled until he found a way. Tomorrow promises to be another long day, but I think our guys will be ready."
Day two of the tournament will begin at 9:00am on Saturday with the Round of 16.
